Student Absence

The welfare of our children remains a priority for us,  and with this in mind we need to ensure that we receive communication about any child who is unexpectedly absent. Parents/carers should ring the academy (01302 868414) before 8:45am each day their child is absent giving the reason for the absence.  If we do not receive notification of absence, we will be following the procedure outlined below:

  • Phoning contact numbers as provided by you to try and gain verbal confirmation that your child is absent with your knowledge (please complete and return the attached form to provide us with three up to date contact numbers for your child as soon as possible). One of the numbers should be a mobile telephone number.
  • If we are not able to contact you by phone then a member of staff will carry out a home visit on the morning of absence (please complete the attached form, adding all possible addresses that your child may be at if absent/sick).
  • In the unlikely event that we cannot gain satisfaction that your child is absent with your knowledge, then we are now required to phone the police, for them to make enquiries as to the safety and well-being of your child.

With enhanced and efficient communication between home and school, we can all be sure that our children are safe and well.

Holidays in Term Time

The Government implemented new legislation effective from 1st September 2013 which means that no requests for holidays can be authorised except in exceptional circumstances.

When a parent/carer wishes to apply to take their child out of school during term time they must complete a leave of absence form and this should be submitted to the academy at least 4 weeks before the proposed start of the holiday and before booking the holiday.

If you take your child on holiday during term time, without the authorisation of the principal, the principal may  make a request to the Local Authority to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice.  If a Fixed Penalty Notice is issued, the penalty is £60 per child, per parent/carer when the payment is made within 21 days, after it will increase to £120. Failure to pay within 28 days will result in a summons to appear before the Magistrates Court on the grounds that the parent/carer has failed to secure their child’s regular attendance at school. If the case progresses to court you may receive a fine of up to £1000.00  Please note that a separate Fixed Penalty Notice will be issued to each parent for each child and all monies are payable to the Local Authority.

Please contact Mrs Anderson at the academy if you wish to request a leave of absence form for your child.
