Teresa House

Mother Teresa of Kolkata (Calcutta)  August 26, 1910 - September 5, 1997

Mother Teresa was a popular choice for a House icon amongst staff and students at school.  Mother Teresa (born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu )  was a Roman Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work. For over forty years, she ministered to the needs of the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying of Kolkata (Calcutta ).  As the Missionaries of Charity grew under Teresa's leadership, they expanded their ministry to other countries. By the 1970s she had become internationally famed as a humanitarian and  campaigner for the poor and helpless, due in part to a documentary, and book, Something Beautiful for God  by Malcolm Muggeridge.  Following her death she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

Teresa House had a productive year once again and although we finished in 3rd place in the almightily sought after House Cup Competition we had plenty to celebrate. Firstly we had some very positive exams results from our students both in Yr 11 and the 6th form. Yr 11 were predicted to achieve 86% 5 A*-C and achieved exactly that with 51.7 % of students including English & Maths. Well done to all those students receiving their results.

As a House we won the highest attendance in the school which is one of the schools' main targets and we had the least referred students, both of which are something to be proud of. We won the House Sports Day which was a fantastic event and all students thoroughly enjoyed it.

Secondly we ran a number of fund raising events to help a new charity we have selected as part of our House. The charity is Action Aid for children and is aimed to help children in India suffering from Poverty - a worthy cause for Teresa House. This charity will continue throughout this new academic year and we will hopefully raise much more money - a total of £ 136.16 was raised last year.

A gardening project has begun on the school site run by a number of Teresa students who have successfully turned a disused space into a colourful flower and vegetable bed. All forms grew plants from seeds in their form rooms and these were then planted in the weeded flower area behind the Learning Support Unit. Although there is still a way to go students have made a promising start. We are asking for Morrisons vouchers to help with gardening equipment so please drop these off at reception if you have any or give them to students to bring in. Our gardeners would appreciate them.

House day was a huge success in July 2010 during which Teresa students  were taught team work with the Army, made cards to sell for our charity, took part in a quiz, fun games and actually made a Mother Teresa Head and Logo to be positioned in our House corridor.  A brilliant day for all students and one which will be repeated this year.

So what are we aiming for this year? - For all students to be happy, settled and achieving their potential and as a House to be in a higher place for the House Cup. Our new House Captains, Vice Captains and Sports Captains will help the House to achieve this and also come up with new ideas for fund raising events and are as follows :

Amy Clee & Connor Griffiths - House Captains

Jack Gregory & Tom Ritchie - Vice Captains

Dorontina Buja, Chris Stone & Bradley Wilkinson - Sports Captains
