Luther King House
Martin Luther King 1929 - 1968
Martin Luther King was a very popular choice as a House icon amongst our students. They know of his work through assemblies and the history curriculum and admire the way he stood up for justice without resorting to violence - a lesson we could all learn from. He was one of the main leaders of the American civil rights movement, a political activist and Baptist minister, and is regarded as one of America's greatest orators. King's most influential and well-known public address is the "I Have A Dream" speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 1963. In 1964, King became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as a peacemaker, promoting non-violence and equal treatment for different races. On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
What did Luther King House achieve last year?
Luther King House, although not winning the overall House Cup, achieved many positive things throughout the year. Students maintained good behaviour and positive attitudes to learning, as well as improving attendance.
Luther King House maintained an impressive lead over the other three houses in the Dance Mat competition, and gained first place by a considerable way - students were certainly a credit to the House, encouraging each other and supporting forms in doing well throughout the competition. Luther King House, also did extremely well in the numeracy challenge that operated throughout the whole academic year - the House achieved second place, with only a 9 point difference to first place! Luther King House also saw the success of Sallie Lax in the ‘Britain's Got Talent' competition - Sallie and her Grandfather AKA 2 Grand, got through to the finals - a big well done from Luther King house!
As a school we gained the best ever academic results in the history of the school and have a very promising and optimistic outlook for the future. Year 11 students in Luther King House successfully achieved over 70% A*-C, and 39.5% (including English and Maths).
It was an excellent year all round for Luther King House.
