The Design and Technology Curriculum at RAS

Students currently follow the technology curriculum outlined below:

Year 7:

Students in year 7 have started a two year course where they will have first hand experience of design and make activity in a wide variety of materials. They will work with resistant materials such as wood, plastic, graphic media, systems and control in the form of PIC technology, and Food Technology where they have an opportunity to obtain a cooking award through the licence to cook scheme.

Year 8:

Currently, year 8 students follow an existing carousel where they experience Design and Make activity through the medium of food, electronics and structures.

Year 9:

Students have specialised in the areas of 3D Product Design or Hospitality and Catering, where they complete their KS3 National Curriculum experience. Many of the students will have the opportunity to follow part of a GCSE qualification which may lead to certification of their work normally only available to students at KS4.

KS4 - Year 10 and 11:

During their final two years of compulsory education students have had the opportunity to opt for courses that include design and make activity within the specialisms of:

Food Technology; Graphic Products; Resistant Materials and Product Design.

All the above courses give students the opportunity to show what the know, understand and can do, often through extended coursework projects that are heavily geared towards their own interests.

In addition to the above there are opportunities for some students to do one year intensive courses in the areas of Resistant Materials and Graphic Products.

Resistant Materials: A one year intensive course giving students an experience of working in at least 2 material areas from a choice of metals, woods and plastics. Students are expected to produce a portfolio of work demonstrating their research, analysis, design and industrial understanding. There are opportunities to use CAD/CAM. Students also produce a major practical outcome and sit an end of year examination. It is essential that extended home learning exercises are completed on time and coursework deadlines met.

Graphic Products: A one year intensive course giving students an experience of working in a variety of modelling and graphics based materials. Students are expected to produce a portfolio of work demonstrating their research, analysis, design and industrial understanding. Students also produce a major practical outcome and sit an end of year examination. The use of CAD/CAM is encouraged.  It is essential that extending home learning exercises are completed on time and coursework deadlines met.

Some students also have the opportunity to study vocational subjects such as Engineering and  Hospitality and Catering.
